Fire is life! It has always been the center of camp life. There’s something magical and mesmerizing about these flickering flames. Even in our modern homes, fire travels invisibly through walls via insulated copper wire to provide climate control, cooking, lighting, comfort, and entertainment.

In Firecraft Essentials, we will explore the science, art and many uses of fire. Students will learn to gather material from the forest to prepare a fire’s meal plan. We will also learn to safely use different cutting tools to build a fire even in wet conditions. Dry wood is available, even after a hard rain, if you know its secret hiding place.

Team Challenges:

Students will use only one match to ignite their fire lay which will burn a 2×2 inch square of newsprint suspended at knee height on a stick. The final team challenge will be to create fire from scratch by rubbing sticks together.
